Just launched: Gilding the Lily

Gilding the Lily

Justine John is a debut author who left thirty years of corporate life in London to finally write the novel that had been in the back of her mind since she was a child. She had always enjoyed writing shorter pieces but then something happened to her, which was more like fiction than real life, and that gave her the inspiration to finally get round to writing her novel. She wanted to do things properly, so worked with a mentor to get her story in to shape (right up until the 5th draft). Once she was happy with the writing, she pitched to a few literary agencies, but didn’t let rejection set her back. She approached us to help her self-publish her domestic noir novel Gilding the Lily in both paperback and eBook form. We proofread her text, design her front cover and produced the eBook and paperback for her.

Without I_AM-Self-Publishing, I could not have made my book happen. They brought me out from the depths of an agent-rejected woe, and helped me believe again that my book is a good one. They held my hand through the whole process of proofreading, book marketing, brilliant cover design, uploading files and managing my website.  Thanks, you’ve been brilliant!– Justine John

Just Launched: The Yellow Bird

yellow bird self-publishedVisual artist, Sebastian May, approached us a few months ago as he had developed some of his animal illustrations into a children’s book. Although animals have featured in his artwork for some years now, this is the first time he has developed them specifically for children. This gave him the freedom to be a bit more lighthearted and have fun with them. The project became The Yellow Bird, a short story about making friends and protecting animals. Given that the illustrations really make the story, print quality and making sure the colours came out well was very important. You can now use print-on-demand technology to print fantastic quality colour books, and easily sell them all over the world.

“I_AM Self-Publishing’s professional attitude and portfolio of previously published books impressed me and was my reason for working with them. As this was my first book project, I_AM Self-Publishing took the time to guide me through the entire process and answer my questions. They helped me look at the different options available to me, and ultimately helped me create a unique and beautiful first book.” Sebastian May

Big Girls Don't Cry

Ivana Ivancakova came to us with an incredible story to tell. Her modelling career ended in disaster when she was tricked into carrying a secret consignment of cocaine. She had already published the story in her native Slovak, where it quickly became a bestseller and was featured in lots of magazines, and wanted to self-publish a good quality English version. She had been working on the translation for some time, but needed help making the language flow as if it had been written by a native English person. We worked closely with her throughout the editing and proofreading process and even managed to use one of her modelling shots for the cover.

”I am very grateful to the I_AM Self-Publishing team. They are amazing young professionals that offered me fantastic support and advice. They were flexible and understanding, which was especially important to me as I had to fit my publishing in around my job and little girl. I couldn’t have asked for more! I know who to trust with my next project.” – Ivana Ivancakova

Ivana signing copies at her fashionista launch party

A true story, from catwalk to prison. Ivana grew up in a small village in Slovakia, thumbing through fashion magazines and dreaming of life as a model. Despite many obstacles, in 2008, she made it to London and began to work her way up in the fashion industry – modelling, booking models, and doing make-up and styling on photo-shoots. She worked hard and made it to be a catwalk model for London Fashion Week. The city fashion and club scene was a far cry from quiet village life, and she loved every crazy minute of it: the glamour, the parties, the people…

Then she was offered a modelling job that would change her life. She was to be the lead model for a new, exciting collection. She flew out to Buenos Aires, delighted to get international work. However, the whole job was a set-up that cost her two years in a Parisian jail! This book started as a diary that she wrote to help her get through each horrific day behind bars. Her brutally honest and deeply personal account of her rollercoaster journey lays the dangers of the fashion industry bare.
