Ivana Ivancakova came to us with an incredible story to tell. Her modelling career ended in disaster when she was tricked into carrying a secret consignment of cocaine. She had already published the story in her native Slovak, where it quickly became a bestseller and was featured in lots of magazines, and wanted to self-publish a good quality English version. She had been working on the translation for some time, but needed help making the language flow as if it had been written by a native English person. We worked closely with her throughout the editing and proofreading process and even managed to use one of her modelling shots for the cover.
”I am very grateful to the I_AM Self-Publishing team. They are amazing young professionals that offered me fantastic support and advice. They were flexible and understanding, which was especially important to me as I had to fit my publishing in around my job and little girl. I couldn’t have asked for more! I know who to trust with my next project.” – Ivana Ivancakova
About Big Girls Don’t Cry
A true story, from catwalk to prison. Ivana grew up in a small village in Slovakia, thumbing through fashion magazines and dreaming of life as a model. Despite many obstacles, in 2008, she made it to London and began to work her way up in the fashion industry – modelling, booking models, and doing make-up and styling on photo-shoots. She worked hard and made it to be a catwalk model for London Fashion Week. The city fashion and club scene was a far cry from quiet village life, and she loved every crazy minute of it: the glamour, the parties, the people…
Then she was offered a modelling job that would change her life. She was to be the lead model for a new, exciting collection. She flew out to Buenos Aires, delighted to get international work. However, the whole job was a set-up that cost her two years in a Parisian jail! This book started as a diary that she wrote to help her get through each horrific day behind bars. Her brutally honest and deeply personal account of her rollercoaster journey lays the dangers of the fashion industry bare.
