The Perfect Capital is a beautifully written novel that weaves the life and work of master letter-cutter Eric Gill into its narrative. Gill’s ideas were so integral to the project that the author came to us with a very clear concept of how the book should look both inside and out. We collaborated with the author and her designer to bring these ideas to life.
Gill’s famous An Essay on Typography was first published in 1931, however typesetting methods and styles have changed enormously since then. Our challenge was to keep completely true to very strict typesetting rules when working with both text and images. In order to maintain this precise style The Perfect Capital was carefully typeset line by line. Sections of copy had to be manually repositioned to ensure all the illustrations fell in exactly the right place.
An original and aesthetically stunning book that was shortlisted for both a 2014 Design Week Award for Editorial Design and the Best British Book at the British Book Design and Production Awards.
